In this article we provide important information about medicated sleep for children and dental treatment under general anesthesia. We recommend reading our advice to all parents before dental treatment under general anesthesia in order to properly prepare for the procedure and avoid any difficulties.

Examinations to undergo before treatment under anesthesia

Blood tests:

🔹 general blood count with formula;

🔹 time of start and end of bleeding;

🔹 blood count.

Tests should be no more than 5-7 days old!

🔹ECG with transcript (cardiologist’s report)
🔹 ECHO-CS (cardiac ultrasound).

Be sure to have all of the prescribed tests before treatment to provide the necessary data to the anesthesiologist in a timely manner. It is our rule to avoid unnecessary tests if you already have the necessary data.

Informing your child about medicated sleep

Before dental procedures, it is advisable to talk to your child and prepare him or her psychologically for dental treatment under general anesthesia. You should not deceive the child, but simply convey the necessary information in a way that is not disturbing to the child. It is better to explain what will happen and answer questions. If the child has had a fear of dental treatment before, it should be explained that this time he will fall asleep first and wake up with all of his teeth polished.

Actions upon arrival at the dental clinic

Upon arrival at our dental clinic, the child is first supervised by her parents. She is examined by an anesthesiologist and the parents are asked to fill out an anesthesiology questionnaire. You can ask the anesthesiologist any additional questions in advance by phone or just before anesthesia. If possible, please also have your child’s outpatient record and other medical documentation. You should give the anesthesiologist the results of the necessary tests and examinations before medically assisted sleep.

Coming out of medically induced sleep

🔹At the end of dental treatment under general anesthesia, the anesthesiologist takes the child to the recovery room. The parents are then invited to stay with the child, who will wake up in their presence. For 30-60 minutes, the patient is supervised by medical staff and parents. During this time, there is still residual anesthesia medication and the child may still be asleep. You should not wake her unless she wants to be awakened.

🔹After waking up, the nurse takes the IV catheter from the child’s vein. Recommendations for drinking and feeding, using medication, and transporting the child after anesthesia are given to the parents by the anesthesiologist and dentist.

🔹The child should be transported home after anesthesia by car accompanied by an adult in the back seat of the car. Public transportation should not be used.

If parents have reservations about the child’s condition, the anesthesiologist should be notified immediately by telephone.

Medicated sleep is safe

Remember, medicated sleep is a safe procedure. It is better than forcing your child to have a treatment at the dentist if he is panicky about it. Teeth should be treated in time and quietly for the child!

We wish you all good health and good mood!
