What To Do To Parents If A Child Is Afraid Of The Dentist
March 27, 2021
Create a positive image of the doctor. Do not frighten the dentist, read books about doctors, tell that the dentist is a friend. The common phrase: “If you are disobedient, a doctor will come and give an injection”— will not contribute to such an image
🔹Don’t threaten! Phrases such as “If you don’t get treated, your teeth will turn black and fall out” or “If you don’t calm down, you’ll have to be held back” provoke fears and mistrust of you. First, it will ruin your relationship and affect your child’s psyche. Secondly, it will cause additional resistance, as a result of which the fear of the dentist may worsen.
🔹Tell us what to expect from the reception. Explain in detail what the doctor will examine and what procedures will be performed. Silence and deception can lead to hysteria and terrible speculation about the doctor and his tools (children’s imagination can skillfully intimidate themselves). If the child knows in advance what to deal with, the anxiety will be significantly reduced.
🔹Play a visit to the dentist. Play the role of a dentist: conduct an examination, wear disposable gloves so that they are not new to the child. You can use an electric toothbrush instead of a dental tool. Improvise, change roles with the child. The main thing is to make the child understand that it is safe and not scary.
🔹 Keep your promises. If you say that you only go for an examination — do not treat anything this time. If you are planning treatment, be sure to warn.
In no case do not ridicule the child’s fear, do not devalue the fear and do not compare the child with other children who boldly cross the threshold of the dentist’s office. If your child is scared, talk to her about it and try to gradually get rid of her fear.
