Dental sedation
An important aspect of modern dentistry is the comfort and safety of the patient in the dental office. Due to the widespread fear of dental procedures (dental phobia) among children and even adults, a number of sedation (“sedation”) methods have been invented before treatment by a dentist.
The most widespread is dental medicated sleep — because it is safe for the patient’s health. Its essence is the intravenous administration of drugs for general anesthesia or inhalation of special gases (sevoflurane). After the drugs are administered, the patient sleeps for 2-3 seconds and stays asleep for the entire period of dental treatment.
After the drug sleep, the patient remains under the supervision of a trained anesthesiologist for 1-2 years, and then the patient is released home with his/her parents’ accompaniment. The special feature of this treatment is that it has its own specific indications, and not everyone should be under anesthesia.
Dental sedation indications
The most common indications for sleep dental include:
- severe dental phobia;
- Allergy to all kinds of anesthetics in dentistry;
- Psychological disorders which prevent the patient from sitting quietly in the chair;
- Certain congenital conditions;
- Extensive dental work.
